Coaches Bio: Newark Academy Head Basketball Coach, Deon Mingo
A native of Guyana who moved to the United States with his family in 1985, Mingo brings a worldly view to the most diverse university campus in America. The Newark resident was a three-year letterman and a senior captain at East Orange High School in 1999 before going on to play college basketball.
Mingo played two seasons at the County College of Morris before finishing his playing career at Bloomfield College where he received his bachelors degree in sociology and criminal justice in 2007. He completed work on a masters degree in sports administration from Fairleigh Dickinson University in 2009.
As a player at Bloomfield, he helped the Deacons to back-to-back Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) titles and consecutive NCAA Division II Championship Tournament berths for head coach Gerald Holmes.
He served as an assistant coach at Bloomfield from 2006 to 2008 before serving for four seasons as an assistant boys' basketball coach at the Dwight Englewood School. DES posted records of 21-1 in 2010-11 and 22-5 in 2011-12.
Mingo is currently the head basketball coach at Newark Academy. When asked about what coaching means to him, Mingo said the following, "coaching helps me fulfill my passion for basketball and its an opportunity to help student-athletes become the best they can be on and off the court."
